Gary has been coaching basketball at the high school level for 44 years. He began as an assistant coach at both Molalla and Canby high schools benefitting from strong mentors during those years before accepting the Head Coaching position at Western Mennonite, now Western Christian. He served there for 38 years. Of those years, 14 were also spent coaching travel teams, primarily Western Middle School athletes, building the program from within.
With a 786- 254 record, Gary attributes his success as a coach to the examples set by numerous former coaches and mentors. He believes there is always more for him to learn. He is also very intentional about teaching fundamentals and believes that this approach has been key to his success. His teams have reached the state tournament 21 times during his tenure at Western, including 19 consecutive trips, one of which was a modified tournament during COVID. His teams have played in nine state championships, winning four. He has been recognized as State Coach of the Year and has received Coach of the Year honors within the league multiple times. He was honored to receive the Regional Coach of the Year award several years ago and was nominated a second time.
He experienced immense joy coaching both his children during their younger years and continued to coach his son throughout all four years of high school. He also stepped in to assist with the girls’ team during his daughter’s senior year.
Gary Hull is married to Brenda and has two children, Madison and Keaton, along with a daughter-in-law, Leah, and a granddaughter, Maya. His faith in Jesus Christ is the most important relationship in his life, and he is grateful to be back at a Christian school, which allows him to share his faith with his players. He is an avid Packers fan and enjoys puzzles, traveling, and watching high school and college sports.
